# Notes, Tasks, and Image Attachments (/docs/guide/notes-and-tasks)

## Notes [#notes]

Beyond its title, a topic can hold a free-form note.

1. Select a single topic
2. Open the **Note** tab in the Inspector
3. Type your note. It's saved automatically when you select a different topic (there's no need to confirm)

Notes support Markdown syntax.

* **iOS**: Notes have two modes, **View** and **Edit**. In View mode, headings, lists, quotes, and so on render as formatted text; tapping the body switches to Edit mode. In Edit mode, you edit the raw Markdown text directly
* **macOS**: Notes are edited as plain text. You can write Markdown syntax, but it isn't rendered as formatted text

You can't edit a note while multiple topics are selected, or while no topic is selected.

## Viewing Task Attributes [#viewing-task-attributes]

Topics with task attributes created in iThoughtsX display the same way in Thoughtree.

* A progress badge appears on the topic
* Selecting a topic shows a box with details such as effort, remaining, and cost
* The **Hide Completed Tasks** toggle on the Layout tab lets you temporarily hide completed tasks (see [Layout Settings](/docs/guide/layout-settings))
* Use the menu **Topic → Arrange → Arrange Children by Task Status** to sort child topics by task status

<Callout title="About Editing Task Attributes">
  Currently, Thoughtree has no interface for creating or editing task attributes such as due date or priority. Support extends only to displaying and preserving task attributes already set in iThoughtsX.
</Callout>

## Attaching Images [#attaching-images]

You can attach an image to a topic and use it as the displayed image.

* **macOS**: Selecting a topic shows a capsule (the inline format bar) on the canvas. Choose the **Image** button in it, then pick an image file from the file picker
* **iOS**: Tap the **Image** button in the bottom toolbar to open your photo library, then choose the image you want to add

In both cases, you need to select the topic first.
